Dariush Ayyari, a distinguished Iranian cinematographer whose work helped bring some of the country’s most powerful and socially significant stories to the screen, has passed away. Iran’s House of Cinema confirmed his death, marking the loss of an important figure in Iranian cinema whose career spanned four decades.
Born in 1946, Ayyari began his professional career in feature films with Tanoureh Div in 1985. Over the following decades, he contributed to numerous productions, working with filmmakers who explored the complexities of Iranian society and everyday life. His notable credits include Women’s Prison (Zendan-e Zanan), The Paternal House (Khaneh Pedari), Three Women (Se Zan), The Girl in the Sneakers (Dokhtari ba Kafsh-haye Katani), and The Old Road (Jadeh Ghadim).
Ayyari’s importance extended beyond his technical achievements behind the camera. Many of his films addressed sensitive social issues, including women’s struggles, generational tensions, violence, and the pressures of traditional expectations. Women’s Prison examined the lives of incarcerated women, while The Paternal House confronted deeply rooted patterns of violence against women and became the subject of significant controversy and censorship. The Girl in the Sneakers explored the challenges facing young Iranians and the tensions between personal freedom and social restrictions.
Through his visual storytelling, Ayyari helped filmmakers transform these difficult subjects into compelling cinematic experiences. His work contributed to the tradition of socially-engaged Iranian cinema, which has earned international recognition for its ability to portray human experiences with depth, realism and emotional power.
His passing comes at a particularly difficult time for Iran, as war and economic hardship continue to affect the country’s cultural institutions and artistic community. His legacy underscores the importance of Iranian artists in preserving the country’s cultural identity and giving voice to stories that might otherwise remain unheard.
The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) extends its deepest condolences to Dariush Ayyari’s family, friends, colleagues and admirers in Iran and around the world. We honor his remarkable contributions to Iranian cinema and the generations of filmmakers and audiences who have benefited from his work. His artistic legacy will live on through the films and stories he helped bring to life.
